The transactions CSV has the lots. A 2025 broker form may only have the proceeds.

Cash App bitcoin taxes
Cash App’s help, read for BasisFix in October 2026, describes Form 1099-DA for bitcoin sales and for Lightning payments to Square merchants. It says 2025 forms report proceeds as net cash and do not report basis, that each 2025 sale can be its own 1099-DA, and that earlier years used Form 1099-B. One sentence on that same help text still says they file a copy of Form 1099-B. Those sentences do not match. Use the form you received. The worksheet from your CSV is a review with a tax pro.
What the broker form is, and is not
- A sale, and a Lightning payment to a Square merchant, can appear as proceeds.
- For 2025, their help says basis is not on the form. Your cost is in the transactions CSV and in whatever other records you kept.
- Person-to-person sends and withdrawals to an external wallet are not, according to that help, lines on the 1099-DA. A withdrawal to yourself is usually a transfer of the same lot. A payment to someone else can be a disposition even though the form is silent.
- Receiving no form, or receiving a form that skips a sale, does not remove the reporting. Compare the CSV to the form. The broader broker rules are on Form 1099-DA explained.
What BasisFix reads from the CSV
Detection looks for Transaction Type, Asset Type, and Asset Amount. Status values that mean pending, failed, or canceled are skipped. Recognized types:
- Bitcoin Buy or Buy. A purchase. When Currency is USD and Net Amount is present, basis is net amount plus fee. Otherwise basis is the Amount column. If both are blank and Asset Price is filled in, basis is that price times quantity, plus a USD fee. Asset Price does not override an explicit net or amount.
- Bitcoin Round Up, Round Up, Bitcoin Roundup. A buy. Cash App’s help describes Round Ups as spare change invested in bitcoin, with no fee on the round-up itself. The help page does not publish the Transaction Type string, so these labels are accepted on a BTC row rather than copied from a specification.
- Auto Invest, Recurring Buy, and the same words with “Bitcoin” in front. A buy, when Asset Type is BTC. Those strings are accepted labels, not an official type list.
- Bitcoin Sell or Sell. A disposal. Proceeds are Net Amount, or Amount minus fee when net is missing, with the Asset Price fallback only when both dollar columns are blank.
- Bitcoin Withdrawal, Withdrawal, Sent Bitcoin. A transfer out. Not a sale. Matched to a receive in another file, the original basis and date move. The row is flagged so it is not silent.
- Sent P2P, Bitcoin Sent P2P, Received P2P, Bitcoin Received P2P, when the asset is BTC. A transfer, plus a warning. BasisFix does not book the send as a sale or the receipt as income. Cash App’s help says person-to-person activity is not on the 1099-DA and that the tax character can still be a gain, a loss, a gift, or something else. A dollar Sent P2P with no bitcoin asset is skipped.
- Received Bitcoin, Bitcoin Deposit, Deposit. A transfer in, when the asset is BTC.
- Boost, Bitcoin Boost, Boost Payment, when Asset Type is BTC. Ordinary income in the “other” category, not interest. A later sale uses that value as basis. See bitcoin interest income. A Boost Payment with no bitcoin asset is skipped. Paid in Bitcoin and Got Paid are accepted as the same income category; they are not an official type string.
A row whose Asset Type is present and is not BTC, such as a stock, is skipped. A row with no asset and a type that does not say bitcoin is skipped. Any other Transaction Type on a BTC row is reported and skipped. If Currency is not USD, the worksheet keeps the bitcoin row and leaves the USD amount empty, so a later sale of that lot is an incomplete disposal. There is no exchange-rate table in this build.
BasisFix does not import the 1099-DA PDF or the IRS’s copy. You compare proceeds by hand: the form’s dollars against the sell row’s proceeds. A sale with no 1099-DA is box I or L. If the 1099-DA reported the sale and left basis blank, mark that lot H or K. If it reported basis, mark it G or J. The letters and the Schedule D lines are on Form 8949 for bitcoin.
Questions
Does a Cash App 1099-DA include basis for 2025 sales?
Cash App’s help, as reviewed in October 2026, says 2025 bitcoin sales are reported on Form 1099-DA with proceeds equal to net cash and without basis. Basis has to come from the transactions CSV or your other records.
Is a send to a friend on the 1099-DA?
Cash App’s help says person-to-person activity and transfers to an external wallet are not on the 1099-DA. They can still be part of your lot history, and a payment can still be a disposition. Absence from the form is not the tax answer.
How does BasisFix read a buy and a sell?
A completed Bitcoin Buy uses net amount plus fee as basis when net amount is present, otherwise the amount. If both dollar columns are blank and Asset Price is present, basis is that price times the bitcoin quantity, plus a USD fee. A Bitcoin Sell uses net amount as proceeds when it is present, otherwise amount minus fee, with the same price fallback. Pending, failed, and canceled rows are skipped.
Is a Cash App round-up or a person-to-person send a sale?
Cash App’s help describes Round Ups as spare change invested in bitcoin, and it says the round-up itself has no fee. BasisFix reads a BTC row labeled Bitcoin Round Up, Round Up, or Bitcoin Roundup as a buy. Auto Invest and Recurring Buy are accepted labels on a BTC row; they are not strings copied from an official CSV specification. A BTC Sent P2P or Received P2P row is kept as a transfer and warned. It is not booked as a sale or as income, because Cash App says the tax character of person-to-person activity can vary. A Bitcoin Withdrawal is a transfer, not a sale.
