Coinbase CSV to a Form 8949 worksheet
BasisFix reads a Coinbase transaction-history CSV when the header contains Transaction Type and Quantity Transacted. A file with another header is reported and skipped. The worksheet is a review with a tax pro. Notice 2014-21 treats bitcoin as property. A sale or exchange can be a row on Form 8949. This page does not file that form.
How a row is read
- Buy and Advanced Trade Buy. Basis is the total inclusive of fees and/or spread when that column is filled. Otherwise it is subtotal plus fees. The fee is not added a second time.
- Sell and Advanced Trade Sell. Proceeds are that same total when it is filled. Otherwise they are subtotal minus fees.
- Send and Withdrawal. A transfer out, not a sale. This row does not create proceeds. See self-transfers are not sales.
- Receive and Deposit. A transfer in. The row does not invent a USD basis. A matched send from another account can carry basis and the original date.
- Rewards Income, Reward Income, Learning Reward, Staking Income, and Coinbase Earn. Income at the total when that cell is filled. The category is other ordinary income, not interest, mining, or referral. See bitcoin interest income.
- Convert. Skipped. Split it into a sell and a buy before importing it. BasisFix will not guess the two legs.
A row whose status is failed, canceled, cancelled, pending, or declined is skipped. The account name is coinbase. The external id is the ID, Transaction ID, or Transaction Hash cell, in that order. Other assets in the file are read when the type is recognized. The product is aimed at bitcoin; an ether row is not dropped and is not a claim that BasisFix covers DeFi.
Dates are read as UTC when the cell has no timezone. A missing dollar amount stays missing. BasisFix does not substitute zero. Box letters for a sale you do report are on Form 8949 for bitcoin.
How to import a Coinbase CSV
- Export the Coinbase transaction-history CSV whose header includes Transaction Type and Quantity Transacted.
- Open the reconciler and drop the file in. Parsing stays in this browser.
- Pick the tax year and FIFO, HIFO, or specific identification.
- Read the warnings. Split a Convert row into a sell and a buy if you want those coins on the worksheet.
- Review the worksheet. It is labeled review with a tax pro, and this page is not tax advice.
