review with a tax pro. Federal brackets below are for taxable years beginning in 2026.
Enter proceeds, basis, a filing status, and taxable income before this gain. A long-term gain is stacked on that income. A short-term gain is taxed as ordinary income. The optional state box is a flat percent you type, applied only to this gain. It is not a state tax table.
The ordinary brackets and the 0%, 15%, and 20% long-term amounts are from IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32, section 4.01 and section 4.03. The revenue procedure is as in effect on October 9, 2025, and it modifies Rev. Proc. 2024-40 for Public Law 119-21. If later IRS guidance changes the amounts, confirm that guidance. This page does not invent 2027 figures and does not editorialize about the statute.
A surviving spouse who files a joint return uses the married filing jointly columns. Estates and trusts are omitted. The 28% collectibles rate and unrecaptured section 1250 gain do not apply to bitcoin. Net investment income tax is 3.8% under 26 USC 1411. The thresholds are statutory and are not inflation-adjusted: $250,000 married filing jointly, $125,000 married filing separately, and $200,000 for single and head of household. Leave MAGI blank to skip that line. A capital loss uses IRC 1211(b): at most $3,000 against ordinary income this year, or $1,500 if married filing separately. Unused loss is noted. A full carryover is not computed.
