The Form 1040 digital asset question
Form 1040 asks whether you received, sold, exchanged, or otherwise disposed of a digital asset during the year. The exact sentence and the exceptions have changed from one instructions booklet to the next. This page does not quote the checkbox and does not list this year’s exclusions. Read the form and the instructions for the year you are filing.
BasisFix does not answer the question. A Form 8949 worksheet is a list of sales the CSV supported. It is not a yes or no at the top of Form 1040. Buying bitcoin and holding it, receiving it as income, or sending it to your own wallet can each be something the instructions treat differently. BasisFix will not choose the answer for you. The worksheet remains a review with a tax pro.
If a sale is on the worksheet, that is a disposition you can see in the file. It still does not mark the Form 1040 question. Broker forms are a separate stack: Form 1099-DA can report proceeds, and sometimes basis, for sales a broker is required to report. A sale that never hits a 1099-DA can still be a sale. See Form 8949 for bitcoin.
Questions
Does BasisFix answer the digital-asset question?
No. It writes a worksheet of lots and sales. It does not check a box on Form 1040.
If I only bought bitcoin, is the answer no?
This page does not say. The instructions for the year you file say which receipts count. Do not take the answer from BasisFix.
Is the question the same thing as Form 8949?
No. Form 8949 lists dispositions of capital assets. The Form 1040 question is a yes or no about digital-asset activity, and its exceptions are in that year’s instructions.
